newest revision of the sketching tool i’m developing (slooooooowly) in processing.

been a while since i posted anything here. i’ve been away from melbourne for over a month now, mostly working in an apple orchard.

here’s a quick test render of a processing sketch i’m playing around with at the moment, inspired by the fantastic SuperDraw.

    bracketed clone fold

    October 28, 2008. generative, video. , , ,

Bracketed Clone Fold is an interactive video installation that was exhibited for Under The Gun at the RMIT School of Art Gallery, Melbourne, in October 2008.

The camera and projector are connected to a MacBook Pro, which runs a purpose-built VDMX project. The DV camera records 30 seconds of video, which is then played back over the projector, while the next 30 seconds is captured, creating what is essentially a controlled feedback loop.

The piece began as a study of analog video disintegration - how the image quality of a piece of video would degrade over time if re-recorded through an analog loop. After some experimentation, I decided it would be more interesting to allow for user interaction with the piece, creating a space between the camera/projector and the wall for people to enter and be recorded.

Bracketed Clone Fold will be on display at the RMIT School of Art Gallery in Melbourne until October 31, 2008.

    sketch 15

    March 26, 2008. generative. ,

working again with using perlin noise for generating motion, sketch 15 draws straight lines - lots of straight lines.

perlin noise generates 2 pairs of xy coordinates, drawing a straight line between them with a very low alpha value (and pseudorandom colour values), producing beautiful results when the lines cross over each other. playing with the number of lines, colours, noise increments and the weighting of the noise (which direction the lines are more inclined to head in) vastly changes the outcome.

the ones tagged with HD on the playlist are 1280×720, so they’re a bit slower to load but look really nice in fullscreen mode…

    sketch 8

    March 22, 2008. generative. , ,

another quick processing sketch, some 2d drawing stuff.

i was inspired by superdraw as a live visual tool based on (sort of) simple line drawings, and started having a play around. i’m yet to dive into 3D in processing, so the output is somewhat limited, but it’s a start, right?

    sketch 10b

    March 18, 2008. generative. ,

i’ve been using processing again lately, and i’ve had a few decent outcomes. sketch 10b just spits out ellipses in different directions at different velocities according to a perlin noise algorithm. veeeeery simple stuff, but i’m just trying to remember how to do it all again…
